Other options near the site are the town of Strängnäs, Mariefred or Nyköping. Strängnäs is on the shore of lake Mälaren and dates back to aprox. 1000 AD. Popular sights are the Cathedral, the Swedish tank museum and picturesque streets. Mariefred is the neighbouring town to Strängnäs, also on the waterfront. The main attraction in Mariefred is Gripsholms castle which houses the Swedish State’s collection of portraits but another must see if you are in the area is Taxinge Castle which these days is known as the cake castle due to their café’s cake buffé with more cakes, cookies and desserts than you have probably ever seen in one place. Nyköping is the city closest to Skavsta airport, it has a castle, some museums and nice cafés.

For getting around Stockholm the tube is recommended, and the SL site has an excellent travel-planning app that shows routes and times. For getting from Arlanda you will have to check SJ or Arlanda Express for trains and Flygbussarna for the bus times.
